Brian Keating - Losing the Nobel Prize: A Story of Cosmology, Ambition, and the Perils of Science’s Highest Honor

Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 7pm
Dove Library-Schulman Auditorium
Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane, Carlsbad, CA 92011

Join UCSD astrophysicist Brian Keating to discuss his new book which tells the inside story of a quest to unlock one of cosmology’s biggest mysteries, derailed by the lure of the Nobel Prize. Keating brings to vivid life the highly competitive, take-no- prisoners, publish-or- perish world of modern science. Along the way, he provocatively argues that the Nobel Prize, instead of advancing scientific progress, may actually hamper it, encouraging speed and greed while punishing collaboration and bold innovation. Keating offers practical solutions for reforming the prize. A book signing will follow the Talk.

“Brian Keating’s riveting new book tells the inside story of the search for cosmic origins, emphasizing the influence of Nobel dreams and laying bare the question of whether the lure of grand prizes is ultimately a good thing for science.” —Brian Greene, author of The Elegant Universe

The Jewish Book Award-winning author of Like Dreamers offers a powerful and nuanced call for reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians in Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor. In ten provocative and moving letters, Halevi—who was born in the U.S. and emigrated to Israel in his twenties —shares his passion for his adopted homeland and why he refuses to despair of peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Through his unique prism, Halevi reveals the complex strands of faith, pride, anger, and anguish he feels as a Jew living in Israel.

Halevi is a senior fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, where he co-directs, together with Imam Abdullah Antepli of Duke University, the Muslim Leadership Initiative.
