JCC Maccabi Games 2008
The JCC Maccabi Games are coming to San Diego this summer!
This is the first time we are hosting these Olympic-style competitions that will bring 1,500 Jewish teenagers together from Israel, Mexico, England, and around the U.S.
Show your support between August 3-8 by volunteering, hosting athletes in your home, or being a spectator. Opening ceremonies are on Sunday evening, August 3 at Cox Arena, and the athletic competitions and community service projects will take place during the week at the JCC and various venues around San Diego.
Everyone needs a credential—volunteers, host families, athletes and spectators, so register today to secure your space! Go to www.sdmaccabi.org to register or for more information.
Over 1,000 volunteers and 650 host families are needed for this community-wide event that will unite the San Diego Jewish community for a great cause! Help is needed during the days or evenings, so there is a shift available for everyone who wants to help out. Volunteers must be 18 or over. Don’t have a bed? No problem, we’ll supply you with an air mattress.

The e-Schmooze is now going to be a quarterly e-mail. Keep your eyes out for our next singles event, a Break the Fast on Thursday, October 9, as we are focusing on preparations for the JCC Maccabi Games this summer and are restructuring the department.

There’s a new group in town geared towards young Jewish adults ages 21-26. You may have read about it in the June issue of the San Diego Jewish Journal? It’s called JABA. To find out what it stands for and for more information, visit www.lfjcc.org/jaba.

If you are between the ages of 25-45, make sure you are on the YAD mailing list, the United Jewish Federation’s Young Adult Division. Click on www.yadsandiego.org.

Jewish single parents, are you on the mailing list for Jewish Family Service’s Supporting Jewish Single Parents programs? Go to www.jfssd.org and click on Programs and Services or Jewish Connections for more information.

Check out the other community groups listed at the bottom of this newsletter for additional activities that Jewish singles can join.

There’s something for everyone at the ‘J’ from cultural programs such as the Jewish Book Fair each November, the Jewish Film Festival in February, the Jewish Music Series in May & June, J*Company’s youth theatre productions, Camp Jaycee, preschool, fitness classes and our newly remodeled Friedenberg Pool.

So come on out and get involved this summer!

Volunteer Opportunities

Jewish Family Service BIGPal Mentoring Program For Boys and Girls

The Jewish Family Service BIGPal Mentoring Program provides a unique opportunity for a caring Jewish adult to form a meaningful relationship with a Jewish boy or girl. We need male and female Big Pals, ages 19 and up. Children 6-16 years old from single parent or non-traditional families and in need of an additional adult role model are eligible to receive Big Pals. Big and Little Pals meet two times each month to participate in recreational, educational, or community activities they both enjoy.

We have recently had a number of Jewish women interested in becoming mentors to Jewish girls. BIGPals is a mentoring program that matches Jewish adults with children age 6-16 from Jewish single parent or non-traditional families. We are currently looking for single parents who would like their age 6-16 year old daughters to get involved in this program and cultivate a relationship with a female mentor. For more information please call 858-637-3090 or e-mail elizabethm@jfssd.org.
