THE TROTSKY: Leon Bronstein is not your average Montreal West high school student. For one thing, none of his peers can claim to be the reincarnation of early 20th century Soviet iconoclast and Red Army hero, Leon Trotsky. When his father sends Leon to public school as punishment for starting a hunger strike at Papa's clothing factory, Leon quickly lends new meaning to the term 'student union', determined as he is to live out his pre-ordained destiny to the fullest and change the world.

In this course we will look at major developments in the region, including the effects of the “Arab Spring” in Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt, the civil war in Syria, Iran’s nuclear program, and the deadlock in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. We will do so both to assess the prospects for progress in the region and the implications for Israel and American foreign policy. Readings will be recommended and the instructor’s forthcoming article, “Leading from Behind: the Obama Doctrine and U.S. Policy in the Middle East,” will be provided by internet posting.
Tuesday, July 09 - Tuesday, July 30

Jewish mysticism, or Kabbalah, has been shrouded in mystery and tied in “red strings.” It is, however, simply a way of understanding the relationship between the infinitely incomprehensible (G-d) and the finite universe. In this class, we will study the Kabbalistic understanding of G-d, creation, and the human soul.
Tuesday, August 06 - Tuesday, September 03
Lawrence Family JCC OR Congregation Beth Israel
This four-part course considers the most mysterious part of Israel's history: the beginning. Where did the tribes of Israel come from and when? Is there evidence for an Exodus from Egypt or a conquest of Canaan? When and how did monotheism emerge, the worship of Yahweh in particular? These questions and more will be tackled in this exciting seminar series.
