Message from the Teen Director
After being at the JCC for over two years now, I’ve been able to watch the Teen Department blossom into a thriving community for teens to come together. I look forward to further growth and development in 2013. The Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center’s Teen Department hosts an array of enriching programing that brings together teens of diverse backgrounds from all over San Diego. It’s exciting to provide experiences for teens to develop into emotionally well-rounded leaders of the future!
The Teen Leadership Council began their term by growing substantially in size and scope! We now have 50 active teen leaders participating in the planning and implementation of meaningful teen programming! Led by President Tiana Pidgeon, the talented and motivated teens continue to impress with their forward thinking ideas, thoughtful discussion, and overall enthusiasm for the upcoming year and future. We have so many established successful programs that will be offered like; Club J, Dodgeball Tournaments, Partners in Prevention, Teen and Parent Seminar Series, and the West Coast College Tour. Our Girls Life program, funded by the Jewish Women’s Foundation provides a fabulous leadership opportunity for tween girls and our new Tween Programming offers awesome social events for middle school boys and girls! JSERVE will be back again bringing together over 250 volunteers to participate in six community service sites and our new Social Action Leadership Institute funded by the Jewish Federation of San Diego County’s Innovation Grant, takes teen leaders to Washington D.C. to meet with political leaders and learn how to advocate for causes they believe are important. We will also be offering a Boston College Tour for teens to travel to the east coast and check out all the amazing colleges in New England! Finally, our JCC Maccabi Games and JCC Maccabi Artsfest will be an experience of a lifetime with the entire San Diego Delegation representing our community in this celebration of Jewish sports and community!
There is so much to look forward to this year! The Teen Department at the Lawrence Family JCC will continue to provide teens with opportunities to become well-rounded individuals through multi-faceted experiences that celebrate our Jewish community. We will continue the tradition of excellent and meaningful teen programming with a mission to unite even more San Diego teens in an environment that fosters self-esteem, Jewish identity, individuality, community service, and leadership.
